Efficacy: Dysport has been clinically studied and tested and has proven to be very effective in treating both cosmetic and medical concerns, such as the elimination of fine lines and wrinkles.
WHAT IS DYSPORT TREATMENT?
It is a type of neurotoxin, otherwise known as botulinum toxin A used primarily to treat and prevent wrinkles from forming. Upon injection into a given muscle, Dysport causes the muscle to relax, restricting contractions and facial expressions that typically lead to the formation of lines and wrinkles. As one of the leading competitors of Botox, it is a very popular cosmetic treatment and is even used to treat a variety of medical conditions.

As one of the leading competitors of Botox, it is a very popular cosmetic treatment and is even used to treat a variety of medical conditions.
WHY IS DYSPORT SO POPULAR?
One of the most common and first signs of aging is the development of rhytids and wrinkles on the forehead and around the eyes. While plastic surgery is an option, this drug allows for a less intimidating, less invasive, and less permanent method to prevent, reduce, and eliminate these lines non surgically in as little as 15 minutes. Aside from its ability to treat wrinkles, this chemical is also used for other cosmetic purposes such as jaw slimming, and to treat an array of medical conditions including TMJ, hyperhidrosis, and chronic migraines.
Dysport is often used in place of or in conjunction with Botox, as the two are very much alike but some patients respond better to one or the other. This treatment allows patients to achieve their aesthetic goals in a minimally invasive manner for a more youthful appearance and an overall confidence boost and is becoming increasingly popular for its safety and efficacy.
WHAT DOES DYSPORT DO? HOW DOES IT WORK?
Wrinkles are formed over time with repeated facial expressions and muscle contractions such as raising eyebrows, squinting, and frowning. In short, the product is made of botulinum toxin (abobotulinumtoxinA) and works by relaxing or “freezing” the muscles in which it is injected, reducing the appearance of dynamic wrinkles in the face.
Dysport acts as a neuromodulator that blocks the release of acetylcholine from presynaptic motor neurons, causing the injected muscle to relax. This in turn leads to the reduction of lines and wrinkles that are otherwise caused by facial muscle contractions.
WHAT ARE DYSPORT TREATMENT AREAS?
You may be wondering, where can you use Dysport? It can be used for both medical and cosmetic purposes.
Cosmetic:
- Dysport forehead lines: You can get Dysport before and after forehead wrinkle reduction, to target the frown lines (glabellar lines) or the horizontal lines that run across your forehead. Dysport for wrinkles is common in several Dysport forehead injection sites. This is why the Dysport cost forehead varies.
- Dysport Crow’s feet: You can get Dysport around your eyes to get rid of the facial wrinkles that develop over time in that area. Dysport for crow’s feet is one of the most popular procedures. Dysport under eyes before and after injection will make you look overall more youthful. The Dysport dosage for crow’s feet varies from patient to patient.
- Dysport for gummy smile: Dysport injections can be administered to reduce the appearance of a gummy smile, when too much of the gum line is showing when you smile.
- Dysport around the mouth: Over time, you may also notice lines forming around your mouth, such as smoker’s lines. Small amounts of Dysport may also be injected to reduce the appearance of these wrinkles.
- Dysport brow lift: Dysport may be used to give drooping eyebrows a bit of a lift.
- Dysport face slimming: Dysport face injections can help to reduce the appearance of a square face by relaxing your jaw muscles and giving you a slimmer face.
- Dysport for neck cords or bands: Platysmal bands located vertically along the neck can cause the skin to stretch over time, resulting in a turkey neck. When this muscle relaxer is injected into these bands it will reduce the severity of these muscles flexing, and thus, reduce the chances of developing lax skin in the neck.
- Dysport for chin: Chin dimples or “orange peel” like texture in the chin is common and can be reduced using Dysport injections to reduce the mentalis muscle activity and smooth the chin.
Medical:
- Dysport for sweating (hyperhidrosis): People who sweat excessively have found that this muscle relaxer is a great way to stop sweating in areas such as the underarms and forehead.
- Dysport for TMJ: If you have TMJ, a Dysport injection will weaken the muscles in your jaw to eliminate the pain and prevent you from grinding your teeth.
- Dysport for migraines: In patients with chronic migraines, this toxin may be used in various locations along the head and back of the neck to release tension, often reducing the severity of headaches.
WHO IS A CANDIDATE FOR DYSPORT?
This neuromodulator is a wonderful treatment to use on both men and women above 18 who are struggling with visible signs of aging, looking to make minor cosmetic adjustments to their face shape, or suffering from the above-mentioned medical conditions.
There are some cases in which Dysport may not be an option, including:
- If you are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have allergies to any of its ingredients
- Have a skin infection around the treatment area
- Have underlying neurological disorders
- Have swallowing or breathing problems
- If you are looking to treat deep wrinkles, folds, or scars
Always consult with a board-certified cosmetic physician, like Dr. Schwarzburg, to discuss your medical history and confirm that you are a good candidate for Dysport.
HOW DO I PREPARE FOR DYSPORT INJECTIONS?
Because this is a minimally invasive procedure, there is not much preparation needed. However, there are some precautions that you can take to minimize bruising, namely, avoiding alcohol consumption and blood thinners such as Aspirin one week prior to your appointment. If you are sensitive to pain, you may inform your provider beforehand and a topical numbing cream can be applied before the injection process to minimize discomfort.
WHAT IS A DYSPORT PROCEDURE LIKE?
Consultation: Before the injection process, you will have a consultation with Dr. Schwarzburg to discuss your medical history and aesthetic goals and to establish the optimal treatment plan for you. While some patients may prefer a bit of movement, others prefer no animation, in which case additional units may be added.
Procedure: The procedure itself is quick and will begin with proper sanitation of the area to be treated. Next, Dr. Schwarzburg will mark the injection points using a skin-safe marker, which will be followed by the injection process. Here, Dr. Schwarbzurg will use an ultra-fine needle to strategically place the product into the areas that need it most, which will take no longer than 10 – 15 minutes unless a larger area needs to be covered. Once complete, you will be provided with an ice pack and are free to return to normal activities with the exception of intense exercise or rubbing the treated area for 24 – 48 hours following your visit.
HOW LONG IS A DYSPORT PROCEDURE?
The injections themselves take an average of 10 – 15 minutes, though this may vary depending on the size and number of Dysport injection areas covered. If a topical numbing cream is applied beforehand, it will have to settle for approximately 15 – 20 minutes to reduce discomfort.
ARE THERE ANY RISKS AND SIDE EFFECTS WITH DYSPORT?
Immediately after the procedure, you may notice some redness, swelling, tenderness, minor bruising, and in some cases headaches. These nuisances usually resolve within a few hours or a few days. However, you are able to return to your daily activities immediately and can cover any traces with makeup.
Rare side effects include non-target diffusion, in which the product may migrate to surrounding areas causing asymmetry. This typically only occurs if your injections were administered by an inexperienced injector or if you rubbed the treated area right after your procedure. Botulism or “Dysport Poisoning” would require an absurd number of units directly injected into the bloodstream, which is why this is not a side effect included.
IS THERE AFTERCARE OR DOWNTIME FOR DYSPORT?
The aftercare for Dysport is minimal and includes avoiding rubbing the treated area, strenuous activities or exercise, facials, and other treatments for at least 24 hours. If there is any swelling you may apply an ice pack on the first day, and a warm compress on day 2, if any bruising occurs.
HOW MUCH IS DYSPORT PER UNIT?
Dysport cost generally ranges between $4 and $10 per 1 unit or $300 and $600 per area. The cost is determined by the area of injection, number of units used, the experience of the doctor, and the location of the practice. It takes approximately Dysport 50 units or 60 units of product to treat severe frown lines and other general areas. 100 units of Dysport cost anywhere from $400 – $1000. It is critical to have an experienced and licensed doctor perform this procedure to avoid side effects such as asymmetry or eyelid drooping. Your final price will be determined after a thorough consultation with Dr. Schwarzburg.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
CAN I COMBINE DYSPORT WITH OTHER TREATMENTS?
Yes! In fact, Dysport is frequently paired with other minimally invasive procedures to achieve enhanced rejuvenation. Other neurotoxins such as Botox, Xeomin, and Jeaveau may be used in conjunction with Dysport and other cosmetic injectables and fillers including Juvederm and Restylane can be used to fill in hollow areas of the face or enhance facial features for an overall more youthful appearance.
For patients looking to improve the quality of their skin, skin tightening and medical-grade facials such as Fraxel laser and Secret RF microneedling, amongst many others are a wonderful option.
Because Dysport will not lift sagging skin, some patients opt for a nonsurgical facelift, also known as the PDO thread lift for a more dramatic transformation and lift.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DYSPORT VS BOTOX?
Clinical studies have confirmed that there is no difference between the two products aside from their mean protein content per unit. Botox contains 5 ng protein per 100 units, while Dysport contains 4.25 ng protein per 500 units. This simply means that Botox and Dysport have a slightly different chemical composition, though it is still unclear whether the differences in protein load have any clinical significance in results. In other words, an average dose of Botox is 20 units, while the average dose for Dysport is 60 units, both of which achieve the same results.
WHICH LASTS LONGER, DYSPORT OR BOTOX?
Clinical trials provide evidence that both Dysport and Botox last an average of 4 – 6 months. While some patients swear by one or the other and everyone has a different response, the two products typically result in the same outcome.
IS DYSPORT AS GOOD AS BOTOX?
Botox and Dysport are equally as good, though some patients prefer one over the other. You can discuss these details with Dr. Schwarzburg during your consultation to customize your treatment.
WHAT IS STRONGER BOTOX OR DYSPORT?
Both products are equally strong but have a different chemical compositions. 60 units of Dysport equate to 20 units of Botox. In other words, Dysport is slightly more “diluted” than Botox.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DYSPORT VS. XEOMIN?
Just like Dysport, Xeomin is a neuromodulator using botulinum toxin to relax the muscle in which it is injected. The primary difference is that Xeomin does not contain any additives or accessory proteins, which is why it is often used on patients who have developed a resistance to Dysport or Botox.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DYSPORT VS. JEUVEAU?
Jeuveau includes an additional purification process of protein which is said to make the formulation safer. Jeuveau is only used for cosmetic purposes, while Dysport is also used to treat medical conditions.
WHAT IS THE BEST NEUROMODULATOR TO USE?
Botox, best Dysport, Xeomin, and Jeuveau are all very similar in function and only differ in chemical composition. There is no single neuromodulator that is better than the other. The best way to determine which one is right for you is to consult with Dr. Schwarzburg or try each product to see which one you like the best.
HOW MUCH DYSPORT DO I NEED?
The number of units needed is determined by the severity of the wrinkles you are looking to treat, the size of the area, the strength of the targeted muscle, and your individual response to Dysport. On average, most patients get 60 units of Dysport per treatment area, though this also depends on your desired result.
HOW MANY INJECTIONS WILL I NEED?
The number of injections is always variable and depends on the extensiveness of the procedure, areas to be treated and the size and strength of the muscles to be treated. Dysport for masseter slimming for example often requires more units than horizontal forehead lines, but fewer injection points.
HOW MANY DYSPORT UNITS PER AREA ARE NEEDED FOR FOREHEAD WRINKLES?
The number of units needed to treat forehead wrinkles is variable and depends on the severity of your wrinkles, the strength of your frontalis muscles, and your desired result. On average most patients start with 60 units of Dysport for the forehead.
BOTOX AND DYSPORT FOR MEN
There seems to be a social stigma against men getting cosmetic injectables. However, research shows that 10% of Dysport patients are men and that this number is growing. Anyone, male or female, is eligible for a Dysport procedure.
DOES DYSPORT HURT?
While you may experience some discomfort during the injection process, Dysport is a fairly quick procedure and is typically well tolerated by patients. If you are sensitive to pain you may also ask your provider to apply a topical numbing agent beforehand to minimize pain.
WHEN WILL I SEE THE RESULTS?
Dysport before after results are typically observed within 3 – 5 days and are fully evident after 1 – 2 weeks. This varies from patient to patient.
WHAT WILL MY DYSPORT BEFORE AND AFTER RESULTS LOOK LIKE?
Before your Dysport treatment, you will have some fine lines and wrinkles that are bothering you around your forehead and eyes or other concerns related to overactive facial and neck muscles. After your injections, the wrinkles will be reduced or eliminated, and other concerns will be relieved.
CAN DYSPORT LIFT YOUR EYEBROWS?
Yes! When injected into the orbicularis oculi muscles surrounding the eyes, Dysport releases the tension that pulls the ends of the eyebrows downward. In addition, Dysport injected into the superior half of the frontalis muscle causes the inferior half to compensate, pulling the eyebrows upward as a result.
IS IT POSSIBLE TO GET MY LIPS PLUMPED WITH DYSPORT?
Dysport may be injected right above the vermillion border for a subtle “lip flip”, though the results of this may vary and only give the illusion of a fuller lip, rather than actually adding volume like a dermal filler would.
DYSPORT AND HYPERHIDROSIS FOR UNDERARM SWEATING
Excessive underarm sweating is a common, yet very uncomfortable phenomenon medically known as hyperhidrosis and is the result of overactive sweat glands. When injected into the sweat glands, Dysport blocks the nerves that activate them, reducing excessive sweating.
HOW LONG DOES IT LAST?
Dysport results can last anywhere from 3 to 6 months depending on the location of injection, the age of the patient injected, and the patient’s individual response to the treatment.
HOW TO MAKE DYSPORT LAST LONGER
There is nothing you can physically do to increase the longevity of Dysport, however, most patients get regular follow-up sessions bi-monthly or every 3 months to maintain their results.
ARE COSMETIC INJECTABLES A LONG-TERM TREATMENT FOR FACIAL REJUVENATION?
Neurotoxins in general are a great long-term option for facial rejuvenation. Though regular touch-up sessions are needed to maintain results, continued use of Dysport and other neuromodulators prevents the formation of new wrinkles due to the overall inactivity of the facial muscles.
IS IT COVERED BY INSURANCE?
When used cosmetically Dysport is not covered by insurance. In some cases, it is covered by insurance for migraines, TMJ, and hyperhidrosis.
DOES DYSPORT WORK?
Yes! Dysport is a clinically effective product to treat fine lines, rhytids, and wrinkles, as well as a variety of other cosmetic concerns and medical conditions such as TMJ, hyperhidrosis, and chronic migraines.
IS DYSPORT SAFE? WHAT IS DYSPORT FDA APPROVED FOR?
Yes, Dysport is FDA approved for the treatment of moderate wrinkles and lines. While there are some potential risks and side effects associated, they are mild and relatively rare. After your visit, you will be able to return to normal activities immediately without any downtime.
WHAT ARE THE PROS AND CONS?
Pros:
- Minimally invasive treatment
- Not painful with minimal discomfort
- Limited side effects and downtime
Cons:
- Not permanent solution to wrinkle prevention
- Needs regular touch-ups to maintain results
- Not ideal for deep wrinkles and folds
