Hyaluronic acid (HA) based dermal fillers have been used for almost 2 decades in cosmetic and dermatologic medicine. After Juvederm, an injectable HA filler manufactured by Allergan, was released in 2006, Juvederm Voluma XC was developed and FDA approved in 2020 and is particularly popular in patients looking to add volume to areas such as the lips and cheeks, amongst other areas for a more sculpted and “snatched” look.

With age we naturally lose volume in the face, particularly in the cheeks, under eyes, and even our lips, due to decreased natural hyaluronic acid production. While it is impossible to naturally replace this lost volume, Juvederm Voluma is an excellent choice to replace lost volume for an overall more youthful and supple appearance.

Volume loss causes us to look older as it results in a gaunt appearance, especially in the cheek area. While plastic surgery can be used to rejuvenate the face, it is invasive and rarely is able to replace lost facial fat and volume. Using Juvederm Voluma as a minimally invasive and low-risk alternative allows patients to instantly fill in hollow areas in various regions of the face with minimal to no downtime.

Juvederm Voluma with lidocaine injection

With age, our bodies begin to produce less collagen and hyaluronic acid, which is reflected by loss of overall facial volume and structure that keeps us looking youthful. Instead we begin to look gaunt, hollow, and old, particularly in the midface, around the cheeks, and under eyes. As a result, our skin also becomes lax, in addition to the gradual increase in wrinkles and folds in various regions of the face. In the past, plastic surgery was the only option to tighten and lift the skin, leaving people to resort to invasive procedures and implants.

Today, Dermal fillers such as Juvederm Voluma have allowed for a minimally invasive and instant alternative to implants, leaving patients with a rejuvenated face, and minimal to no pain, risks, or downtime. Juvederm has a wide range of dermal fillers, however, Juvederm Voluma XC includes lidocaine, making the overall injection process nearly pain-free. Juvederm Voluma can be used to replace facial volume loss and to enhance certain features that have deflated over time, such as the structure of the cheeks, the temples, and the lips.

A common area in which Juvederm Voluma is utilized is the chin. Many of us have recessed chins, making our faces look asymmetrical from a profile perspective, rather than defined. Dr. Schwarzburg uses Juvederm Voluma for this particular area to bring out the chin for a subtle and natural looking enhancement, creating a beautiful profile without the need for surgical implants. This often goes hand in hand with the jawline, in which Voluma may also be used for jawline contouring.

How does Juvederm Voluma XC differ from Juvederm Ultra plus XC?

The family of Juvederm products vary in hyaluronic acid gel thickness and density. While Juvederm Voluma XC and Juvederm Ultra Plus XC may be used interchangeably in some cases, it is best to consult with Dr. Schwarzburg to determine which product will meet your aesthetic needs, based on your unique anatomy and the area you wish to treat.

Juvederm Ultra Plus is typically used in areas such as smile lines, also known as nasolabial folds and to magnify the lips. Juvederm Voluma is more commonly used for areas that patients want to pronounce, which also includes the lips, as well as the cheeks for enhanced cheek bones.

Juvederm Voluma is very popular for lip augmentation. As its name suggests, Voluma has a unique hyaluronic acid formulation that offers additional volume expansion, making it exemplary for those looking for a more dramatic lip enhancement. It is also used on patients with very thin lips, in which case a dermal filler that is known for its intensified expansion upon injection is ideal.

During your consultation with Dr. Schwarzburg, you will discuss your aesthetic goals and medical history with him, to determine whether Voluma is the appropriate dermal filler in your case. Based on the information discussed with him, Dr. Schwarzburg will construct a unique treatment plan for you to successfully achieve your desired result.

Am I a good candidate for Juvederm voluma injections?

Most patients are candidates for Juvederm Voluma, depending on the areas they are looking to improve on aesthetically. Juvederm Voluma can be used on patients 18 years or older to either emphasize certain regions of the face, or to fill in areas in which facial volume is decreased, like the under eyes or midface. If you are an overall healthy individual looking to add volume or bring out some of your facial features with natural looking results, then you are a candidate for Juvederm Voluma.

Juvederm Voluma XC has a unique formulation that includes 0.3% of lidocaine, an anesthetic, making the overall injection process tolerable for most patients. Depending on the treatment area, a topical numbing cream can be applied prior to your injections, for a smooth and painless experience. If you are particularly pain sensitive, you can also ask Dr. Schwarzburg for lidocaine injections, for a full on painless experience.

During your Juvederm Voluma treatment, the targeted area will be sanitized and a topical numbing cream applied and settle for 15 – 20 minutes. Once the area is numb, the area will be sanitized once more, after which the injection process will begin.

Dr. Schwarzburg always uses ultra-fine needles to ensure precise injections and minimal discomfort. Depending on the facial region, your Juvederm Voluma procedure will take approximately 15 – 30 minutes.

Once complete, you will be provided with an ice pack and post care instructions, which include icing the treated area for the remainder of the day of the injections, followed by a warm compress if bruising occurs on day 2. You should also avoid touching, rubbing, or massaging the area in which Voluma was injected to avoid migration of the filler, for 2 – 3 days after your initial appointment.

How long does it take to see Juvederm Voluma results?

Juvederm Voluma results can be observed immediately upon injection and expand over the course of several hours following your treatment as the hyaluronic acid containing product has intense hydrophilic properties and absorbs millions of water molecules in the treated area. In addition, Voluma stimulates collagen production, aiding in the restoration of volume.

How long will my Juvederm Voluma results last?

Clinical studies have shown consistency in the longevity of Juvederm Voluma, lasting for up to 2 years. However, most patients can expect their filler to gradually dissolve after 6 – 12 months post injection. The duration of the results also vary depending on the area in which Juvederm Voluma was injected. Regions that are more metabolically active, such as the lips and nasolabial folds often tend to be degraded by the body quicker than areas such as the cheeks.

  • Juvederm Voluma XC in the cheeks may last for up to 2 years. Because Voluma retains moisture and helps stimulate collagen and elastin production, your body can maintain the results of this filler for an extended period of time in the cheeks.
  • Juvederm Voluma in the chin is injected deep into the skin to emphasize its structure for a more elegant looking profile. Voluma can last for approximately one year in the chin, depending on your body’s biological response to the filler itself.
  • Voluma in the lips typically lasts between 9 – 12 months. Because your mouth is an active area, as you speak, pucker your lips, eat, and drink, the product may dissolve quicker than in less animated regions of the face. To maintain the size and shape of your lips after your Juvederm Voluma injections, Dr. Schwarzburg recommends annual or bi-annual follow-up appointments to touch up on volume that has been lost over the course of several months.

What is the post-care for Voluma?

Post treatment care is minimal after cosmetic injections. Dr. Schwarzburg will provide you with an ice pack to apply to the treated area immediately after the injection process, that should be applied for the remainder of day 1. It is best to steer clear of blood thinners such as aspirin, as well as alcohol, and exercise for 2 – 3 days following your treatment. If bruising occurs on day 2, you may apply a hot compress to mitigate the bruising and speed up the healing process. You should also avoid rubbing, massaging, or touching your new filler for 3 days, to avoid migration of the product. Dr. Schwarzburg will see you for a follow-up appointment one week after your procedure to confirm that your filler has settled properly and do touch-ups if necessary.

As any injectable dermal filler, risks and side effects are possible for Juvederm Voluma. Bruising and swelling are normal, and may occur in some patients, though these side effects are short-lived and expected. Allergic reactions to Voluma are extremely rare, though you can ask for a hypersensitivity test before your injections to confirm that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients and make sure that you before and after Juvederm Voluma results turn out as beautiful as expected.

Juvederm Voluma typically ranges $900 – $1400 per 1 syringe, depending on the area to be treated and how many syringes are needed for your desired result.

Juvederm Voluma can be used with a number of other cosmetic injectables and treatments. Many patients use Botox or Dysport in conjunction with their Voluma fillers to smooth out fine lines and wrinkles in the treated area, whether it be to treat crow’s feet, or even a lip flip to further enhance the lips.

In certain regions of the face, Restylane may be a more suitable option as a dermal filler, for example for under eye fillers, in which case Juvederm Voluma may be used for cheek filler, combined with Restylane for the under eyes.

For patients looking to improve their overall skin texture, Juvederm Voluma can help provide some hydration, though lasers, such as Fraxel, or microneedling treatments including Secret RF or AquaGold are better options to improve the quality of your skin.

Depending on the area(s) that you want to treat, one syringe (or 1mL) of Juvederm Voluma may be just enough to achieve your desired outcome. However, some patients want to treat various regions of the face, while others may generally need more product than others, in which case several syringes of Voluma may be necessary for optimal results.

Juvederm can be injected in several areas of the face as it has a variety of products with unique formulations and thicknesses. Juvederm fillers are typically used on the face and injected into the skin, in the cheeks, under eyes, lips, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, chin, and jawline. It may also be injected into the neck, to disguise the horizontal neck lines that form with age. The type of Juvederm product used will be selected by Dr. Schwarzburg, based on the area of concern and the patient’s unique facial anatomy.

What is Juvederm Voluma?

Juvederm Voluma XC consists of cross linked hyaluronic acid using Vycross technology, and contains 0.3% the numbing agent lidocaine, which is what the “XC” after the name of the filler stands for, making the injection process more tolerable. While Voluma was originally designed for more mature patients looking to restore lost facial volume, Dr. Schwarzburg frequently incorporates Juvederm Voluma XC in his patient’s customized treatment plans to correct asymmetry and enhance or contour certain features of the face. Its Vycross technology allows for instant and natural looking results with minimal to no downtime.

Can other dermal fillers be used with Juvederm Voluma XC?

Juvederm Voluma can be used with any other dermal filler depending on the aesthetic you are going for. In fact, Dr. Schwarzburg frequently uses a variety of dermal fillers to treat different areas of the face and body, as all patients have a different anatomy and require a unique treatment plan which often consists of more than just one type of dermal filler. For example, Restylane is oftentimes a more appropriate option for the under eyes, as its formulation is less dense than most Juvederm products. In addition, Dr. Schwarzburg has a unique approach to Sculptra butt injections, by combining Sculptra (Poly-L-lactic acid) with Juvederm Voluma, allowing patients to get more immediate results while simultaneously and gradually growing their buttocks as Sculptra stimulates collagen production.

Can Juvederm Voluma also treat acne scars?

Dr. Schwarzburg sees a lot of patients who have deep acne scars as a result of acne breakouts throughout their life. Acne causes inflammation and volume loss, leaving us with acne scars or “craters”, which can follow us far beyond the years of the acne breakouts themselves, taking a huge toll on our self confidence. Juvederm Voluma XC can be used to fill in these acne scars in some cases to make them less visible and more shallow. However, filling in acne scars with dermal filler can be challenging and will not permanently solve the problem. For a more permanent solution, Dr. Schwarzburg treats his patients with Secret RF microneedling and Fraxel to stimulate collagen production and improve the overall quality of the skin, making it smoother all together, rather than temporarily filling the scars in with Voluma.

Many factors contribute to aging and facial volume loss, in which case Juvederm Voluma XC can be an excellent solution for rejuvenation. The following are common components that cause aging and facial volume loss:

  • Genetics
  • Volume loss due to decrease in collagen and hyaluronic acid production in the skin with age
  • Lifestyle (smoking, sun damage, environmental factors affecting the quality of your skin)

Juvederm Voluma XC is an outstanding product that will restore facial volume with immediate and painless results.

Depending on your aesthetic goals, Juvederm Voluma can be used in place of plastic surgery in most cases.

If your goal is to add volume to hollow areas of the face, such as the under eyes and cheeks, or to increase the size of your lips, then Voluma is a great option.

However, if you are looking to lift sagging or drooping skin, dermal fillers will likely not be ideal, as they only offer volume and enhancement of facial features, rather than lifting droopy skin. In this case, a non-surgical face lift, such as a PDO thread lift, may be a more suitable option.
